Certificate IV in English Language Teaching (TESOL)

Duration: 26 weeks
Work placement: 12 hours
Program Delivery: Online - Self paced 

Students must have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, enter answers to written questions and communicate with instructors via email, the student portal and the learning management system.

Students should have access to the internet, data, a laptop or computer with Microsoft Teams to successfully participate in this program.

Course Overview

This program is designed to equip you for paid or volunteer employment in ‘English as a Second Language’ (ESL) teaching positions. It will provide you with a range of knowledge and skills to plan and deliver English lessons, as well as further develop specific competencies in an elective area. With a high focus on practical demonstration of skills, you will be ‘employment ready’ upon your graduation.

  • Develop and implement play-based learning programs that promote cognitive, social, and emotional growth  

  • Ensure the safety, well-being, and inclusion of all children in your care

  • Support children with diverse needs through tailored educational approaches 
    Promote children's independence, confidence, and curiosity through guided exploration and creativity  

  • Apply leadership and mentoring skills to guide and support other educators

Career prospects

With an Australian Bachelor’s degree in any field, Certificate IV TESOL graduates could gain employment at the following institutions:

  • private English language colleges

  • community centres

  • universities that offer ELICOS programs

Students who hold this qualification only, could have employment opportunities…

  • in private tutoring, or 

  • paid work overseas 

IOL advises students to contact individual institutions for information regarding the qualification requirements for their TESOL teachers.

Location: Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages work in many regions of Australia.
Industries: Most work in the Education and Training industry.
Earnings: Full-time workers on an adult wage earn around $1,402 per week (similar to the average of $1,460). Earnings tend to be lower when starting out and higher as experience grows.
Full-time: Less than half work full-time (37%, less than the average of 66%), showing there are many opportunities to work part-time.
Hours: Full-time workers spend around 41 hours per week at work (compared to the average of 44 hours).
Age: The average age is 49 years (compared to the average of 40 years). Many workers are 45 years or older (61%).
